"As an entrepreneur, the reason why we are entrepreneurs is because we're not following a rigid set of structured processes and procedures. We're creating. We're bringing about new innovative business."

Leslie H. Tayne, founder of Tayne Law Group P.C. and author of Life & Debt, is no stranger to debt herself. Having graduated law school with $80,000 in student loan debt, which doubled because of mishandled payments, she now runs a very successful law practice to help people in similar situations. 

Immediately after she finished law school, she started as a criminal defense attorney before moving on to being in-house counsel at a national debt company. She found herself disagreeing with the owners of the company on several compliance issues, and they weren’t as established as she’d felt comfortable with, so she left. She felt she could do it better, so she started her own practice. "I said, ‘I can do this and I can create a service that's out there that will really be meaningful.’"

Keep in mind that Tayne decided to start her own practice as a single mother with three children, all under the age of five. She found herself “grappling with the parent-entrepreneur roles” often, but she kept pressing on. "I'm a decision maker. I'm not one to ever sit on the fence. Once I make the decision I just go with it without looking back." 

To build a strong entrepreneurial foundation, she used resources she already had to build her business, such as professional connections. "I found somebody who was a mentor to me who I could call up on a regular basis, ask questions about not only the business structure but dealing with certain business-related issues and that was really important to the success of my business - that I had somebody I could go to." Once she started to say, "what's the decision I would make," and then have her mentor confirm that decision, she felt like she didn't need a mentor anymore.

Lisa Opie, founder of Vizcaya Swimwear, co-founder of Lady Code, and official swimwear sponsor of the Miss United States 2016 national pageant, has a background story few people believe. 

"I ended up being bullied because I was so socially awkward [that] I didn't know how to talk to people because I was homeschooled, so I had to drop out of that. I went back to homeschooling." When she re-enrolled in school, the bullying continued, but she decided she wasn't going to take it anymore. She enrolled in pageants because she wanted to prove her bullies wrong. "I can be better than this; I can be beautiful." 

Pageantry prevented Opie from going down a self-destructive path that most people take to cope with bullying. "It helped me build confidence. It helped me stay in shape. It made me just focus on what I wanted out of life, and not what other people thought.”

While she didn't place in Miss Virginia, she had such a good experience that she wanted to continue competing. Because she couldn’t afford to buy one, she designed her own swimsuit, and then was asked to design a national swimsuit. She realized that this was an excellent business opportunity, and that's how Vizcaya Swimwear was born.

“It was the bullies. I really have to thank the bullies out there because I just wanted to prove them wrong. Just being up there on that stage and showing them that I can be confident-- even the opportunity to share my story.”

Amy Wilkinson has been a White House Fellow for nearly four years doing international trade and economics before she decided to embark on a 5-year research-filled journey of creating a fool-proof handbook to be a creator. Her journey resulted in 10,000 pages of transcripts from interviewing 200 top creators, including Elon Musk of Tesla, SpaceX, and PayPal.  She asked a series of questions and then came up with a pattern recognition to figure out what skills they have in common. Finding and tracking down the founders to interview was the hardest thing Wilkinson had ever done - harder than being a banker in M&A, which she was.

What she learned through her research was that anyone can create and scale an idea. She came up with 6 codes that every single creator that she interviewed already possessed.

  "You don't have to be in a certain city at a certain moment in time. You don't have to have that many dollars. You don't have to have a certain degree. These ideas can pop up almost anywhere and across different kinds of pursuits." 

Now a professor at the Stanford Graduate School Business, Wilkinson, a graduate herself, passed up many unique and rare opportunities in order to write this book. "At the outset, I believed it would matter, and therefore I pursued it. That's a very common thing for entrepreneurs - regardless of what their pursuit is - you have to believe that it will matter."

"One of the really important things that entrepreneurs know and that most people are figuring out now is: there is no right answer in a globally linked and technologically-accelerated world. It's almost impossible to anticipate where an idea is going to go."

“That leap was the hardest and most important to turn it into something real.”

Forbes once referred to her company as Craigslist meets Uber for furniture, but Jenny Morrill, co-founder of Move Loot has created something much greater than that. The only thing that Move Loot has in common with Craigslist is that you can buy quality furniture “that has been loved and used before.” And that’s where it ends. The difference starts at knowing that whatever you buy from Move Loot will definitely be quality furniture - not something from Ikea that was assembled by the boyfriend of someone on her fourth glass of rosé.

Morrill and her three co-founders saw the gap that they needed to fill. They wanted to buy quality furniture from a curated list and at a reasonable price. They “finally decided that [they saw] the opportunity here, the market was huge, this is a big problem with so many people, [and they] need to take the plunge and make this our full-time endeavor." 

While all four founders come from different backgrounds, they “came from these very complementary skillsets that helped this infant" - a skillset that helped their team get accepted to Y Combinator"As a first time founder, we did not really think about a lot of negatives and a lot of the roadblocks, challenges, or obstacles we would have to face from having such a physical business because the idea just resonated so strongly with me and I really believed in what we were doing that I believed there was a solution to any problem we faced."

Morrill and her team have gone through multiple rounds of financing, focusing on “finding investors who had experiences in marketplaces." Morrill knew how important it is to know "who to prioritize when looking for investors because investors specialize - they have knowledge bases in different verticals, and a huge value that we brought in from our investors is their network."

"People want to help, and they want to feel valued, and if you can make them feel valued, they will help you."


Natalie Susi is a teacher by heart, a writer by trade, and an entrepreneur by choice. She went from being a high school teacher in San Diego to being the entrepreneur behind of Bare Organic Mixers. She had been making a low-calorie mixer for cocktails that she brought to her friends’ parties, when she realized there was a real demand for them and little to no supply. Once she realized that there was an open market for her product, she knew she had to be one of the first to bring it to the masses. "I knew that I needed to come up with a great story that people appreciated about the business, I knew that I needed to make good connections that were genuine and authentic." There were certain interpersonal skills that she had already, but as far as building a business plan or a marketing plan Susi knew "none of that stuff." She learned everything she now knows from her three mentors, and from the same way that she did in school for teaching: “I just read a lot, and I listened a lot." For example, she "recognized many years ago that reality TV is a really good way to promote a brand," which is how she ended up on Bravo's Millionaire Matchmaker.

Kier was having a casual back-and-forth with her then-boyfriend-now-husband about what frustrated them as consumers, respectively, and her emphatic response was tampons.“You’re thinking to yourself, ‘I’m on top of most of my sh*t, but this always catches me by surprise’ and why? It’s the one predictable thing that I know is going to happen to me every month.” Nobody was talking about tampons two years ago, which is when Kier came up with the idea for 100% cotton tampons with complete ingredient transparency emerged. She was going to business school at Columbia when she came up with the idea for Lola, and from there, took “this weird detour in a passion that [she] didn’t even know she had.” As it is, there’s so little transparency in the general feminine care industry, so Kier chose 100% cotton as the material because cotton is a natural fiber that is easy to understand. Having casually mentioned the idea of a subscription-based tampon company at school, she was basically laughed out of class. So for her, taking tampons to a more transparent level was enough of a change, retaining what is already a familiar part of a woman’s life: the ubiquitous tampon.

“Starting, building, and growing a company, managing people” is not something Kier could do alone. “Honestly, having a co-founder is like having a spouse,” which is why Kier recommends “dating” your co-founders before marrying them. In other words, she suggests having a trial period like she did with her co-founder. The two spent a few non-committal months during their market research phase to learn about each other’s working styles and figure out whether they’d be compatible business partners. Once they realized they could trust each other, both emotionally and professionally, they got started. 

Kier and her co-founder, Alexandra Friedman, raised over $1M in funding, which was more of a surprise to them than expected. Listen to find out how they were able to raise so much money so quickly and how they became the increasing success they are today.

"This moment that you have when you have absolutely no idea how you are going to make something happen, but you know that it has to get done." - Alexandra Clark

Coming from a family of creatives, the time Alexandra Clark spent with her parents always involved working on creative projects. She started Bon Bon Bon with nothing; she completely funded the endeavor. "Ultimately, I knew that if I could find the right space, I could at least get started." She started by sending her chocolate to hotels everywhere for them to use in their turndown service. Now 27-year-old Alexandra Clark made the Forbes 30 Under 30 list, and she is the first artisan chocolatier in Detroit, MI, in 40 years. 

Usually, it's confidence that enables people to prove their product is the best. For Clark, her self-doubt was the moneymaker. "By not opening for retail, thinking that nobody would want the product," Clark's business accidentally made itself exclusive. This exclusivity created hype that Clark didn't even know she was creating. She finally listened to her neighbor, "Crazy Mike," who suggested she opened her little kitchen for retail once a week. The first day she opened for retail brought in so much business that she was able to pay off an entire year of rent.

"Whatever I do, I do it with a lot of passion." - Miki Agrawal

A first generation Indian-Japanese Canadienne, Miki Agrawal moved to the United States when she enrolled at the prestigious Cornell University. Being the child of immigrants, Agrawal was instilled with a strong level work ethic at a very young age. Growing up, Agrawal was kept so busy going to school seven days a week that she didn't have time to get into any trouble. Fortunately and unfortunately, Agrawal's "aha moment" was due to one of the most tragic days in history; the first and only time Agrawal slept through her alarm clock which was on September 11, 2001, her second week on the job at a prestigious investment banking firm across from - you guessed it - the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center.

After crossing off all the things on her bucket list (playing soccer professionally, making movies, and starting a business), Agrawal teamed up with her twin sister to create Thinx, underwear that never leaks, never stains, and absorbs blood. For every pair of underwear sold, Thinx funds a pack of reusable menstrual pads to girls in the developing world. When the MTA refused to run the advertisement, Agrawal went to the press. "You can't predict virality [sic]," but the MTA scandal she emailed to Forbes went viral. She spent the next four days speaking to over 40 publications, and that really put Thinx on the map. Now, she's working on her second book and two new projects, both with their own respective missions to help women in the developing world.

Sophia Parsa started her first company at 21 Years old and relied enormously on her tutors to make it happen and because of a specific last minute tutor issue she had, a new idea was born: Toot App. 

Sophia is now the proud founder of toot, a mobile app that connects students to tutors in their area to learn anything they want. One would even describe it as a match.com for tutors, which is genius! And in a world where our education system is broken, this idea couldn't have been more timely not to mention needed!

When Adda Birnir was laid off from her job at a high-profile media company in 2009, she noticed that most of the people in the technology department were spared, which got her thinking about the value of their skillset. She began teaching herself basic tech skills, including how to code and build a website. But for Birnir, becoming “tech-literate” was not just about job security – she saw that teaching men and women outside the tech world how to creatively harness tech tools could help them advance their careers in any field. And so, in 2012, she launched Skillcrush, an online series of courses designed to help others – especially women – learn how to code, design a website, and build a digital portfolio.(Via NBC news)

As the CEO and founder of Revolar, Jacqueline has always held a passion for social issues. Jacqueline founded Revolar to disrupt rape culture and change the way people keep themselves and those they love safe. At the helm of Revolar, Jacqueline and her team ran a successful Kickstarter campaign, did the Techstars Boulder 2015 accelerator program, made the Top 25 for Sir Richard Branson’s Extreme Tech Challenge and most recently closed a $3 million financing round with The Foundry Group. Jacqueline is a Florida native, but moved to Denver, CO three years ago to build Revolar where she enjoys rock climbing, volunteering and spending time with her family.
